Affordable housing
Sixty percent of the people in St. Cloud live in economic distress — more than thirty percent of their income goes to housing. Distress is the right word, because all it takes is one stretch of bad luck and almost two-thirds of our neighbors could experience homelessness.
The answer is complex. We need more affordable options, but the problem goes deeper than supply — we need to reform how we fund and oversee both our housing and our help for those experiencing homelessness.
As our State Senator, I have
- Worked for capital investments to increase the supply of affordable housing and incentivize home ownership
- Advocated for our community and mediated conflicts between tenants and landlords
- Passed $40 million for the Greater MN Workforce Housing Program, which creates new workforce rental housing in small and medium-sized communities in Greater Minnesota
- Passed $1 billion for statewide construction of new housing
- Expanded rental aid and a comprehensive tenants’ bill of rights
- Passed emergency shelter grants and increased Local Homelessness Prevention Aid and housing aid targeted at Greater Minnesota
On any given day, three to five percent of our school district’s children experience homelessness.
